There are many reasons why a tooth may be extracted.  The most common reason is due to tooth decay and cavities destroying too much of the tooth structure.  In children, teeth may need to be extracted in orthodontic treatments to allow enough space for the rest of the teeth to move.

Wisdom teeth can sometimes grow in odd directions and may impact other teeth.  If these wisdom teeth are not removed this can lead to crowding of molars.  If wisdom teeth are to not fully grow out or erupt, food and debris may get lodged between the tooth and gums and cause cavities if not cleaned properly.  To avoid these problems, it is common to remove these wisdom teeth.
